Building a Storyboard with the Creative Director

Develop project strategy, editorial segments, interviews, shot lists, and generation-ready media blocks

6 min. Updated 2026-07-29.

From Project Context to Production Plan

The AI Storyboard Builder develops the creative strategy before it creates editable board blocks.

  1. Choose the storyboard type

Choose Creative Storyboard to present the complete approved story frame by frame, including exact compositions, purpose, dialogue or audio, supporting action, and transitions. Choose Director Storyboard for production detail with separate Hero Frame and Coverage Frame references.

  2. Set the content approach

Use AI Recommended or choose Interview-led, Voiceover-led, Interviews + Voiceover, or Visual-only / B-roll. Add optional Must Include requirements when the production format is already known.

  3. Choose the project context

Select a studio project or enter a custom brief.

  4. Complete essential details

Answer any clarifying questions that materially affect the audience, story, locations, talent, or production constraints. You can also use the AI recommendations.

  5. Review the creative strategy

Review the business objective, audience psychology, story arc, interview strategy, edit structure, creative direction, and production approach.

  6. Review segments and shot lists

Check each segment's story purpose, primary shot, interview setup, supporting coverage, edit notes, and production shot list.

  7. Revise and approve

Describe any changes in the plan review, revise it, then approve the plan to create editable storyboard blocks.

  8. Create visual references

Review each image prompt, add optional references from Studio Files, then generate media separately. Director Storyboards include a Hero Frame matching the primary shot and a Coverage Frame matching the planned cutaway.

Tips

  • Planning does not generate media automatically
  • Use project and discovery notes to give the Creative Director reliable context
  • Image generation credits are charged separately inside Creative Storyboard frame blocks
  • Use Improve Storyboard to add, remove, reorder, or revise individual frames and complete segments after the board is built
